FLANGES: FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS

Flanges are joining components developed for applications where standard solutions do not meet specific dimensional, thermal or pressure requirements.

Unlike standard flanges, they are designed through technical co-design with the customer to achieve:

Custom flanges are mainly used in plants and machinery where high mechanical performance, reliable sealing and long-term operational stability are required.

FLANGE CLASSIFICATION

Flanges can be manufactured in fully customised configurations, with defined material grades, pressure classes and drilling patterns:

Pipe flanges

used to connect pipe sections, valves or equipment. They provide reliable sealing and resistance to high internal pressures and are commonly used in energy, hydraulic and petrochemical installations.

designed for permanent or temporary closure of pipes and tanks. They provide leak-tight sealing up to PN400 and are typically used for inspection points or line termination.

suitable for quick connections without welding in low- to medium-pressure applications. They allow faster maintenance and component replacement without extended system downtime.

used for retrofit applications and transitions between different standards. OMGM manufactures custom solutions to adapt ASME components to EN systems, and vice versa, eliminating dimensional incompatibilities.

integrated components designed to reduce the number of joints and increase overall system reliability. These solutions combine clamping and sealing functions within a single CNC-machined part.

MATERIALS FOR FLANGES

Flanges are manufactured from carefully selected materials to ensure mechanical strength, long service life and full compliance with international standards. Commonly used materials include:

1

CARBON STEELS

suitable for high-load industrial applications where strength, tensile resistance and a favourable performance-to-cost ratio are required.

2

STAINLESS STEELS

used where corrosion resistance, dimensional stability and durability are critical in humid, chemically aggressive or hygienic environments. These materials are essential in food processing, pharmaceutical, marine and oil & gas applications.

3

CAST IRON

valued for its rigidity, vibration-damping properties and stability under repetitive loads.

4

BRASS

used for specific flange applications requiring good machinability, corrosion resistance and compatibility with fluids.

5

ALUMINIUM

selected where low weight, natural corrosion resistance and ease of machining are key requirements.

INDUSTRIAL SECTORS AND APPLICATIONS

Flanges are used in a wide range of industrial environments where reliable mechanical connections, high structural strength and dimensional accuracy are essential. Their robustness and design flexibility make them suitable for integration into complex machinery, handling systems and high-pressure installations.

MACHINE TOOLS

Used to connect mechanical assemblies and ensure centring, rigidity and accuracy in rotating units, spindles, rotary tables and actuators.

PACKAGING

Used to connect cams, shafts, gearboxes, pick-and-place systems and high-speed kinematic assemblies.

OIL & GAS

Used to connect pipelines, valves, pumps, heat exchangers and process equipment operating under extreme pressure and environmental conditions.

PHARMACEUTICAL

Applied in sterile packaging machines, precision handling systems, dosing units and mechatronic modules.

MARINE & DEFENCE

Used in onboard systems, propulsion units, actuators, valves and structures exposed to vibration, impact and marine corrosion.

HOW IS A FLANGE MANUFACTURED?

The manufacture of a flange begins with the selection of certified and fully traceable raw materials, compliant with international standards required for industrial service.

Machining operations are carried out on high-precision multitasking CNC machines, enabling turning, milling and drilling of complex geometries while maintaining tight tolerances and controlled couplings. Where required, final grinding operations are performed to achieve the flatness and surface finish needed for critical operating conditions.

Heat treatments and surface coatings can be applied on request to improve wear resistance, corrosion protection or performance in aggressive environments.

Quality control is carried out using advanced metrology equipment, dimensional inspection and non-destructive testing where specified.

FAQ

What does RF flange mean?

RF (Raised Face) refers to a flange with a raised sealing surface. This design increases gasket contact pressure and improves sealing performance in high-pressure systems.

Yes. OMGM manufactures custom flanges ready for integration with shafts, cams, rotary tables and other components, providing fully integrated mechanical solutions.

Dimensional tolerances are verified using 3D CMM measuring machines and certified LAT instruments, ensuring accuracy down to ±0.005 mm and full compliance with customer drawings.
