Cam Manufacturing Across Industries: Production of Mechanical Components
Cams are fundamental elements in automation systems, designed to convert rotary motion into controlled, precise movements. Depending on the application, different types are used, each designed to deliver optimum performance in terms of precision, strength and long-term reliability. The main solutions include drum cams, sector cams and face cams, developed to meet specific production and kinematic requirements.
Drum Cams
The drum cams manufactured by OMGM Group are made from quenched and tempered 42CrMo4, with a finished diameter of Ø304 mm. Before finish-machining the cam track, the material is quenched and tempered to a tensile strength of 1000–1100 N/mm², ensuring stability and strength during operation.
Roughing and finishing of the cam track are performed on 5-axis CNC milling machines, using programs developed with CAD/CAM software to ensure geometric accuracy and process repeatability.
Quality inspection is carried out on a DEA GLOBAL coordinate measuring machine equipped with a scanning probe for accurate measurement of the geometry and form of the cam track.
Sector Cams
Sector cams are manufactured from Uddeholm Rigor and require a multi-stage production process. The component undergoes two heat treatments: a stabilisation treatment followed by quenching and tempering, reaching a final hardness of 60–62 HRC.
Before finish-machining the cam track, a phosphating surface treatment is also applied to improve the surface characteristics of the component. Finishing is performed on 5-axis machines using grinding wheels to achieve a high-quality surface finish, followed by dimensional and geometrical inspection using a DEA GLOBAL coordinate measuring machine.
Face Cams
Face cams complete the OMGM Group production range and are manufactured according to the same standards of precision, control and quality that characterise all cam-profile machining operations. For this type of component, all machining stages are also carried out in-house, from CAD/CAM programming through to final quality inspection.
Careful attention to geometric details and surface finishes enables the production of mechanical components that meet the required specifications, ready for integration into high-reliability industrial systems and applications.
